FAQ

Groups

How do I change Group settings or membership?

Visit the Group Detail of any Group whose settings you wish to change. You will find Edit Group Details and Edit Group Membership options there.

How can I organize the members and comments within a Group?

Sub Groups let you organize any public or restricted group into different issues, interests or any other category. Sub-groups can be created from the Group Detail page. A member of a Sub Group is not automatically a Group member, but be aware: comments made to Sub Groups are visible to all Group members. Sub Group settings are controlled separately, but Group admin can remove Sub Groups at any time.

How do I follow a Group's comment activity?

You can stay on top of any Group’s new comments in three ways:

  1. Subscribe to the Group’s Comment Feed using RSS. When viewing comments, you can set a filter to sort them and the feed you subscribe to for those comments will be filtered in the same way.
  2. View Recent Comments and filter them by your Group of interest.
  3. View the Group Detail page and check out the Comment Feed from there.

If the Group is restricted and you are not a member…don’t fret, you can still follow its activity! Just Subscribe to the Group and it will show up on your Groups. However, you won’t be listed as a member and you cannot add your comments to the Group.

How do I join a restricted Group?

First file a Group Request, then be patient. As soon as one of the Group’s admins accepts your request you will be notified in your News Feed. If you filed a request long ago and have not been accepted, take the reins and create your own Group!

What is a private Group? How do I join one?

Private groups create a completely secure, insulated commenting environment. Only the group's members can add or view comments. No one else can view the group's comments or the list of its members. The group will not show up when someone browses the list of groups on Reframe It.

To join a private Group, you must receive and then accept an invitation from the Group's admin. You cannot request an invitation like you can with restricted Groups since the private Group is not visible. If you personally know the Group's admin you might try emailing or talking to him/her and asking for an invite.

How do I expand Group membership?

Head to the Group Detail page and then Edit Group Membership. You can invite as many people as you want, from email contacts to social network friends to other Reframe It users. Private groups with more than ten members are not free though.

What are subjects?

They are broad categories that let you more easily search groups. If you are a Group admin, you can assign as many as subjects to your Group as you want. Your Group will show up any time someone searches using a subject that you have associated with your Group.

What are places?

Places let you center your group in a particular geographic region. Users running a search through Groups can use place as a criteria.

Comments

How do I change my comment viewing settings (color of highlight, display limits, default appearances)?

Through the Privacy tab in your toolbar you can get to Privacy Preferences, which includes options for changing all kinds of settings. Try having reference text highlighted in black if you’re feeling extreme!

How can I browse ALL comments on Reframe It?

You can use a variety of filters on the Browse Comments page to browse through all publicly visible Reframe It comments.

How do I sort the comments in the margin of the webpage I’m currently viewing?

Select the Comments tab in the toolbar to choose from various sorting options.

How can I quickly return to a comment I made or viewed in the past?

You can keep track of a specific comment in two ways:

  1. Browse Recent Comments while filtering them by "Me" if you want to browse all comments made by you
  2. Bookmark the comment, whether its your own or someone else's

Will the page and margin I'm currently viewing disappear if I click on a user's name for more info?

Clicking on a commentator’s user name will open a new tab that will take you to your Reframe It home page with that user’s Details displayed.

What is "watching"?

Watching lets you keep track of all the comment activity that occurs in the margin of a given URL.

How can I report a comment that offends me? Will you remove it?

Visit the Contact Us section and send us a message with the comment’s author’s username and the link of the website on which it was made. We reserve the right to leave up any content that does not explicitly violate our Terms of Service. You can view those Terms regarding offensive content HERE.

Reframe It fully believes that an online community cannot be successful if its members do not feel safe expressing themselves or interacting with other users. Comments that compromise user safety are those that break federal law, threaten, intimidate or explicitly attack another user. Comments that use discriminatory or hateful language also will not be tolerated. Finally, comments that compromise the anonymity of another user through the inclusion of personal identifiable information will be removed.

Following a first offense, Reframe It often will remove the comment and simply alert its author that their language violated our terms. However, Reframe It reserves the right to reprimand or remove users who continue to behave inappropriately. We do not aim to restrict, police or censor our site since one of our primary social goals is to increase transparency on the web, so we will only enforce these terms when they have clearly been violated. As long as users respect one another and these terms laid out here we believe that our community will create valuable connections between people, inspire new insight and engage honest, constructive dialogue.

How do I view a comment in context on a limited access page?

You must gain access to that webpage through its owner. Reframe It does not grant you access to any sites that you cannot normally view.

How do I create a comment that references two different passages at once?

You cannot currently do that exact task, but you are free to comment on one webpage as many times you want.

Friends & Users:

What is "following" and how is it different from friending?

You will see anonymous following as an option beneath adding a user as a friend—the user will not be notified or required to accept that you are following him or her. If you choose not to follow anonymously, a friend request will be sent to the user that will notify him/her that you are following his/her comments.

I want (or don’t want) to know every time a friend, or a user I’m following, makes a comment.

You will be able to select notification settings when you first add a friend. You can also go back later and edit the options for your News Feed.
