  These deliberative polls may, on the surface, look a lot like the current town halls — a lawmaker and constituents sharing their positions and asking each other questions. But a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes. First, a survey identifies the range of attitudes and demographics in the district, before inviting a randomly selected, representative sample of constituents to attend. A random sample cannot be captured by people with intense interests volunteering themselves. Second, to facilitate discussion, participants are sent balanced briefing materials about the issues to be discussed ahead of time.
  The people who ask the questions are selected by their groups, and their groups decide on which question to ask. The groups are randomly selected as is the overall sample. There is often discussion before a question is selected for 10 minutes to 15 minutes at the end of a small group session. This structure makes the overall process difficult to manipulate.

  The whole thing looks like a gimmick to me. Select people who you know will ask the questions and give the answers you want to bolster your political agenda. Manipulation!!

  any comments on this approach? Seems expensive? Seems artificial? People are wired to read people. If the pollsters succeed in acting and dressing and speaking (accent) and controlling boddy language so that they are perceived to be neutral, that is a new situation for the citizens selected for the poll and so they will act differently as well?

  Blogs, radio shows, text messages and email have made it easier for passionate activists to coopt town halls that allow self-selected groups of citizens speak before an audience and elected officials.   He said he expected Congress, after working on health care, energy and financial regulation, to draft proposed immigration laws before the end of this year, and that he would begin work on getting the laws passed in 2010.
  I am pretty sure Obama is going to make a second term and from the way that he is talking I think he expects to make a second term as well.
