Frequently Asked Questions

Basics

Reframe It

  • What is Reframe It?

Reframe It is a tool that allows you to comment on web content without the permission of the site itself. The Reframe It margin appears next to any webpage in which you can comment on the page as a whole, or highlight text or drag and drop images or video to create comments that refer to specific parts of the page. Comments may be public or private, and you can share what you have written with your friends or groups.

Learn more information about Reframe It.

  • What do I need to use it?

To browse comments on reframeit.com, you do not need to register for the product. However, if you would like to create a profile, view comments in context, and comment on web content, you will need to register on the website and download the appropriate extension.

  • How do I report a bug?

You can report bugs or additional feedback by clicking the “Feedback" tab on the left-hand edge of the website. We welcome any comments that you have about the site.

Profile

Creating

  • Can I make my profile and commenting activity private?

Profile information is public to all users. If you do not wish to divulge private information in your profile, please do not post it. All information you contribute to your profile should be done at your own risk. See the Privacy Policy for more information.

In order to make your commenting activity private, select the “Private" option at the bottom of your comment before you post it in the margin. Currently, you cannot change your previously public comments to private.

  • What is the difference between my user name and my display name?

When you register, you will be asked for a user name. Your user name is the alias that other users can use to identify you, and will be displayed next to each of your comments.

You can opt to create a display name in your profile, however, this is not required.

Once you have registered, you can easily change your display name by altering your user profile, but you cannot change your user name unless you create a new account.

  • Can I change my user name?

No, you cannot change your user name unless you reregister. If you reregister, you cannot transfer all your previous comments or settings.

Comments

Creating

  • What is the difference between a page comment and an anchored comment?

Page comments are comments that you create for an entire page. You do not need to highlight any items on the webpage in order to make a page comment.

Anchored comments refer to a specific section of a webpage, such as text, images, or videos. Before you make an anchored comment, you must highlight the text or drag and drop the video or image into the margin that you would like your comment to refer to.

  • Can I create a comment that references two different passages at once?

Yes, but only if the passages are on the same webpage. To do this, highlight the first section of text, and then hold down the CTRL key while you highlight the second passage. You will then be able to add a comment in the margin. Currently, this only works on text references.

  • What are orphaned comments?

Orphaned comments occur when a user makes an anchored comment before the website alters or removes the referenced text or image. Once the referenced text or image is modified, the margin can no longer recognize what the comment refers to. Orphaned comments can only be viewed by the user who made the comment. You can view your orphaned comments by clicking on the “Orphaned" tab on the right-hand edge of the margin.

  • Can I re-anchor orphaned comments?

Yes. If you have an orphaned comment, click on the “Orphaned" tab in the margin. It will show you the comment that you made and give you the option to re-anchor the comment. Select “Re-anchor" and then simply highlight the content you would like your comment to reference.

  • Can I edit or delete comments that I have made?

No. Once the comment is shared with the Reframe It community, it cannot be altered or deleted.

Browsing

  • How do I browse all comments?

After you log into reframeit.com, click on the “Comments" tab at the top of the page. The page automatically opens with a default browsing setting that allows you to see public comments by your friends. To view all public comments, select “By Everyone" under the browsing comments menu.

  • How do I view comments through a website with limited access?

You cannot view comments in context with text on a limited access page unless you gain access from the site’s owner. To gain access, the owner may ask you to complete a registration form separate from reframeit.com. Reframe It, Inc does not automatically grant access to these pages.

  • If I click on a user’s name in the margin, will the page and margin that I am currently viewing disappear?

No. When you click on a user’s name in the margin, a new tab will open that displays the user’s profile page on reframeit.com. You’re web browser will still contain a tab of the page you were previously viewing.

  • What is “watching" a webpage?

When you watch an entire webpage, you will be notified about all commenting activity that occurs on a specific URL. Visit the website you would like to bookmark and open the margin. Select the “Margin Actions" button at the top right hand corner of the margin. Select “Watch Page." You will be informed via email and your Reframe It newsfeed when a new comment appears in the margin of the webpage.

  • What is a bookmark?

You may select to bookmark a comment. Comment bookmarking allows you to track all replies to a particular comment. To do this, visit the comment that you would like to bookmark. Select the “Action" button in the top right corner of the comment, which will show you a drop down menu. Select “Bookmark Comment." Now you will be notified each time a response is posted to the comment.

  • I commented on text that no longer appears on the webpage. What happened to my comment?

Your comment is considered “orphaned." When referenced text or images are modified or deleted, the margin can no longer locate the original reference of the comment. View your orphaned comment by clicking on the “Orphaned" tab on the right-hand side of the margin. It will only appear if there is in fact an orphaned comment on the page.

  • Why does the total number of comments not equal the number of comments I currently see in the margin?

If the number of visible comments is less than then number of total comments, the margin may have reached its limit for the amount of comments it can display or there are orphaned comments on the page.

By default, the Reframe It margin loads only the first 25 comments for a particular webpage. If you would like to retrieve additional comments, select the appropriate button in the margin, and it will display the next 25 comments.

If text has been altered or removed from a website after you commented on it, the comment now becomes “orphaned." See above for more details. The margin only shows your orphaned comments, not other users’.

  • Can I change my comment viewing settings such as the color of the highlight, display limits, and default appearance?

Currently the Reframe It margin does not allow users to change their comment display settings.

Sorting

  • How do I sort comments in the margin of a webpage that I am currently viewing?

Open the margin and click on the “Filter" button. You will have the option to sort comments that are made by everyone, your friends, your groups, or you may customize your own filter.

Sharing

  • How do I share comments?

Before you start sharing comments, go to the “Sharing" tab on reframit.com. Depending on which mode you would like to share with, you will need to enable sharing or sign in via your email and password.

    • For Facebook, Twitter, and Blogger.

Click the “Enable" button for the respective network. You will be sent to a third party site which will allow Reframe It to access your account without divulging your user name and password.

    • For Friend Feed

You will need to sign in with your Friend Feed user name and Remote Key.

    • For any MetaWeblog Blog

You will need to sign in using your user name, password, XML-RPC URL, and your blog ID.

    • On your own website or blog

Set up a widget on your own website or blog, which can display all your public individual or group comments. You will be asked to enter the desired dimensions of your widget to fit your website. Then, you will be given a preview of what the widget will look like given the size. You must copy and paste the html code shown just below the preview to your site in order to add the widget.

Once your sharing mode is activated, you will be able to share comments with other users through the margin. Below your comment, you will have the option to share it. You may choose to share with various social networks, groups, friends, or via email. Click the respective tab, and place a check mark next to the social network, group, or friend you would like to share with. You can also enter email addresses.

Offensive Comments

  • How do I report comments that offend me?

If you find that a comment is offensive to you, you can flag it for removal. To do this, click on the comment “Action" button in the margin and select “Flag for Spam."

  • Do you remove offensive comments?

Reframe It may or may not remove any comment you find offensive. Reframe It strives to create an online community where users can safely express their opinions and interact with other users. Comments will be removed under the following circumstances:

    1. If it violates Reframe It’s Terms of Service
    2. If it breaks the federal law
    3. If it threatens user safety (i.e. comments that intimidate or explicitly attack another user)
    4. If it compromises the anonymity of another user (i.e. comments that include personal identifiable information of another user)
    5. If it contains discriminatory or hateful language

Reframe It reserves the right to keep posted comments that do not explicitly violate the Terms of Service.

  • How do you handle users who repeatedly post offensive material?

Following the first offense, Reframe It will remove the comment and alert the author that he/she violated the Terms of Service. If the author continues to create inappropriate comments, Reframe It may reprimand or banish the user.

Please be aware that Reframe It’s goal is to inspire new insight and allow for diverse, honest discussions about content found on the web and therefore does not wish to censor the site. Please respect one another.

  • What is a restricted group?

Restricted groups allow all users to browse and view comments made by group members, but only group members can contribute comments and replies.
